Cooler for air compressed by turbocharger of ship's engine

The water-air heat-exchanger is used with large internal combustion engines, especially ships's engines. It includes a number of register pipes (5) held at their ends in perforated tube plates (6). The pipes have gills or flat plates (16) attached to them to give good transfer of heat to the cooling air (L) flowing past the pipes. Identical dome-shaped covers (10,11) are held onto the tube plates by through-bolts and are sealed to them by watertight sealing members (19). The covers are partitioned (12) to form inlet and outlet chambers (8,9) arranged so that the cooling water flows up through some of the pipes, turns through 180 degrees and flows down through the others.
