Equipment for mixing high polymer plastics comprises a rotor (2) with an inlet section (3) and an outer housing (15) which together form a mixing zone along at least part of the length. The mixing zone is divided into two sections between which the rotor (2) has a steep screw pitch (8) and the housing section (18) surrounding this screw section has a smooth inner wall forming a conveying section (7). Preferably both mixing sections have the same length and are formed by axially-adjacent areas (6A, 16) of the rotor (2) and housing (15) with regular, axially parallel groove-like recesses (6,17) in both the outer surface of the rotor (2) and in the opposing inner wall of the housing (15). The areas (6A) in the rotor surface and the areas (16) in the housing inner wall and overlap each other at their ends to allow flow between opposing recesses (6,17). Alternatively the housing wall in the mixing sections (5,9) may have annular grooves (16) and the conveying section (7) is formed by a bush(18) with a smooth inner wall. The inlet section(3) in front of the first mixing section (5) has regular axially parallel, flat longitudinal grooves around the periphery of the rotor (2). The rotor (2) may be part of a self-powered independent mixer or can be connected to the end of an extruder screw (20) with the mixer housing (15) mounted on the extruder housing.
