A method for determining the degree of fineness of textile fibers, in particular flax fibers.

To determine the fineness of textile fibres, especially flax fibres, a fibre sample is irradiated with linearly polarised light. The reflected light is analysed with reference to its polarisation parallel and perpendicular to the plane of oscillation of the light irradiated. From the measured intensities (III and I) of the reflected light polarised in parallel or perpendicularly, the relationship IMAGE is formed as index for the fibre unit. A device for carrying out this measurement comprises a light source for linearly polarised light and a detector with an adjustable analyser.
