The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of nonionic surfactants from fatty acid alkyl esters, mono- or polyhydroxy fatty acid alkyl esters with C6-C22 in the fatty acid component and C1-C4 in the ester component, which are reacted in alkaline medium with one or more isopropylidene derivatives of a polyglycerol at temperatures of 140-220 DEG C and under a vacuum of 950-5 mbar.
