The apparatus is intended to enable the position of power units, in particular vehicles, in a battle area to be fixed on the basis of the formation of gas emanating from them. A motor driven rotary mirror (4) is provided which diverts a vertical laser beam (3) in such a way that the latter turns in a horizontal plane. The rotary mirror (4) reflects scattered light components (7), reradiated from a cloud of gas, of the laser beam (3) onto a light collector (5), which focuses said components onto a detector (8). The detector (8) is connected to an evaluation circuit (12), which transmits a signal if during a revolution of the laser beam (3) in the horizontal plane a more intense scattered light component (7) than usual occurs in an angular subrange because of the cloud of gas (13).
