The recorder tape tension control detects the direction of rotation and the rotation rate of the drive motor (17) for the winding spool (2), and the actual tape tension, to provide a feedback regulation for the drive motor. The measured rotation values are compared with reference values, dependent on the operating mode of the tape recorder. The obtained differences are compared with given values to allow limitation of the motor rotation speed. Pref. the amplitude range of an amplifier (28) controlling the regulating voltage for the drive motor is limited in the positive or negative direction, dependent on the obtained differential values. ADVANTAGE - Reduced damage to magnetic tape even under irregular conditions.
