A two-stage water effluent treatment and nitrification or de-nitrification process incorporates a basin (1) with a water inlet (2) and outlet (3). The basin (1) is subdivided into chambers 1' and 1'' by an intermediate wall (5). The novelty is that the upper rim (6) of the intermediate wall (5) is higher than the water surface in chamber 1' and the water surface in chamber 1'' is higher than in chamber 1' such that the water flows over the upper rim (6) of the intermediate wall (5). Alternatively, the fluid surface in chamber 1' may be higher than that in chamber 1'' provided that complete overflow is assured over the upper rim (6) of the intermediate wall (5). The outlet (3) of chamber 1'' is arranged adjacent to an overflow sepn. wall (12) serving as a weir-type overflow threshold for the water from treatment chamber 1'' for the nitrification process of the drainage gully (13), and from which treated water is drained.
