The uppermost plate is subjected to a greater sliding force than the rest of the stacked plates (1) when the travelling field from the first inductor (2) is applied. The second travelling field is effective in the same direction so that the top plate is slid further towards the conveyor. The inductors (2,3) are then switched to produce fields in the opposite direction so that any other plates that have moved with the top plate are returned to their original stacked position. The stack of plates can be supported on a host (12) for more effective working. A third travelling field inductor (4) can apply a force below which is effective in the opposite direction to release any second plate(s) attached to the uppermost one. The hoist and/or inductors can be controlled by sensors (6,7,8). The third inductor can be controlled by a sensor detecting more than one plate being moved.
