The process for recovering hydrocarbon coolants, typical coolants being butane, propane or bi-methyl propane, from refrigerating plant has the coolant passed through a rack, liquified, filtered and then collected in a tank. The rack (5) is combined with a pressure switch 910) and if there is a pressure drop in the unsealed coolant circuit (6), the switch connects this circuit to a flushing pipe(4) carrying an inert gas. If the coolant pressure is constant or rising, it connects the now-sealed circuit with the pipe to a flame trap(13) and a disposal path (3). From here, using a compressor (26), the coolant mixture is sucked through an oil separator(25) and then the organic components pass to a cooler(31), a filter(48) and a tank (51).
