The invention concerns a method of completely filling horizontal coking ovens with bulk coal through apertures in the roof of the oven without causing pollution, the usable volume of the oven being determined during and/or after each coke-discharge operation and the amount of coal fed into the oven being automatically controlled as a function of this volume.
