The invention concerns a method and device for firing an m-pulse d.c./a.c. converter (2), the device having a firing unit (10) and a shunt assembly (12) which generates master and slave control signals for measured values of the phase current from a master d.c./a.c. converter (4) and a slave d.c./a.c. converter (6) and from control signals from the firing unit (10). The invention calls for time-delay control signals to be generated by delaying the cut-in sides of the signals from the firing unit in dependence on the value of a measured difference in phase current whereas the cut-out sides are accepted without any delay, the delayed firing signals being fed to the master or the slave converter (4, 6) in dependence on the sign of the measured difference in phase current and the firing signals from the firing unit being fed to the other converter (6, 4). The invention thus provides a simple way of symmetrically distributing the phase currents.
