PURPOSE:To attain the low-loss coupling between two fibers by adjusting the relative positional relation between a lens and the fibers so as to maximize the intensity of the incident light obtd. when the outgoing light from the fiber is again returned to the fiber by a plane mirror. CONSTITUTION:The light from an LD light source 7 is made incident through a coupler 6 to the single mode fiber 5. This incident light is focused by the lens and the mirror 1 is irradiated with this light. The reflected light from the mirror 1 is again returned through the lens to the fiber 5 and is introduced through the coupler 6 to a photodetector 8. The total 7 axes of the perpendicular axis and horizontal axis of the mirror 1, the perpendicular axis and horizontal axis of a lens holder 3 and the triaxial directions of a fiber sleeve 4 are so adjusted that the display of the photodetector 8 attains -10.5dBm after the spacing distance between the mirror 1 and the lens holder 3 is adjusted to 10mm. Consequently, the coupling loss when both lens holders are opposed at the spacing of 20mm is made to small value of -0.1dB.
