In a token ring network comprising a plurality of stations, a purge operation is usually started followed by ring-reinitialization when a no-owner frame is to be purged from the token ring network. Ring initialization could undesirably repeat indefinitely in certain situations, disrupting the protocol and ring operation. A method and mechanism are provided by the invention, whereby multiple tokens and no-owner frames are purged from the ring. The mechanism also selects a station in the ring to operate as the ring purger.
