The domestic appliance has its door opened by rotation about a horizontal axis, and has a counterweight mechanism to hold the door in part opened positions and stop it freely falling under its own weight. The counterweight mechanism is provided by two torsion bars (10,11) placed nearly symmetrically relative to a plane midway between the door hinges and perpendicular to the axis of rotation (5) of the door. The torsion bars are held in place by sleeve bearings (12,13,14) fixed to the chassis of the appliance. The outer ends of the torsion bars is bent at right angles (10A,11A) then bent back to carry rollers (15,16) at the end. The rollers run on a surface (1B,2B) fixed to the door. The inner end of the torsion bars is held by a clamp (17,18) with a screw (17A,18A) that allows adjustment of the torsion.
