A hydrocarbon fraction contg. olefins, polyolefins and/or acetylenes and of bromine number 100-10.000 mg/100 g is hydrogenated (with less than 0.15 wt.% conversion of aromatics), whilst at least partly in the liq. phase, at 20-250 deg C and 4-50 bar and a GHSV of 0.2-25 hr-1, using a molar ratio of hydrogen to unsaturates of 0.3-100, over a catalyst comprising a support contg. 0.1-1 wt.% Pd which was treated prior to activation with sufficient organic sulphur cpd. to give a sulphur content of 0.05-1 wt.%.
