The connecting rod is pivoted on the driving cam (3) which has a polygonal track with parallel inner and outer toothed surfaces (6, 7) engaging the toothed output guide wheel. The piston moves downwards, but moves upwards as the corner in the polygonal track causes the cam to rotate anti-clockwise. When the straight sides of the polygon track pass between the gear wheels, the driving cam will move downwards, and at each corner the cam will be driven upwards.
