The method adjusts the motorised lens to a desired focal length. The desired focal length is provided by varying the imaging scale of an objective image seen in the viewfinder using viewfinder adjustment. Several different focal lengths are allocated to a number of different scales. The focal length allocated to the imaging scale obtained by viewfinder adjustment is detected from an, according to the viewfinder adjustment, addressable memory unit containing several focal length values. The selected focal length is used to adjust the lens focal length. The adjustment is preferably started by actuating an operating element on the camera which initiates recording. A coarse adjustment of the focal length may be carried out during the viewfinder adjustment.
