A method for increasing the duration of bioresorption (DBR) in the organism of an implantable, bioresorbable medical or surgical material (I) based on chitin or chitosan involves subjecting (I) to at least one of O-substitution, N-substitution and N-deacetylation (provided that chitosan-based (I) is not subjected to N-deacetylation only). The degree and nature of substitution and/or the degree of residual acetylation or acylation is predetermined or determined for a given level of crystallinity of (I) to provide a DBR of more than 6 months. Also claimed is (I) obtd. by the process and having a DBR of 0.5-5 years, specifically where (I) has a degree of N-acetylation of at most 10% and DBR 0.5-2 years or where (I) has a degree of N-pentanoylation of at most 20% and DBR 2-5 years.
