The transducer has a backing (28) of ultrasonic damping material behind an array of piezoelectric elements (34) which are separated by spaces (36) filled with an insulating polymeric resin. The lens (32) lies on the quarter-wave plate (42) on the front surface of the transducer. The lens has a thickness of no more than 2 mm and the dimensions of the piezoelectric elements, taken parallel to the surfaces, do not exceed 10 mm. The surface of the backing in contact with the piezoelectric elements is conducting or has a surface conducting layer (40). A second conducting layer (38) (or several disconnected conducting layers) covers the second surface of the piezoelectric elements.
