The underground waste storage receptacle comprises a pit (1) in the ground. A platform (4), which can move between active and inactive positions, extends across the pit and closes pit access in the active position. A linkage (6) connected to actuators (16) displaces the platform between active and inactive positions. A tank (8), surmounted by a hollow column (2), is placed on the platform and due to its weight the linkage folds and moves the platform to its inactive position. The upper edge of the tank is then supported on the edge (12) of the pit at ground level. The tank is withdrawn from the pit by pulling on the column ring (14) under which the tank is fixed. Under the lower face of the platform is a clevis in which a latch rotates to come into contact with a support inside the pit and lock the platform in position.
