The covering for a step front edge is constituted by a longitudinal piece (1) having a horizontal upper face (5). It has an almost vertical rear face (6) and a rounded front face (7) curved towards the lower horizontal face. This lower horizontal face is divided in the longitudinal direction into two parts of different thickness, the front part (8) being less deep and thicker than the rear part (9). The two parts of the lower face are separated by a vertical projection (11) surmounted by a longitudinal groove (10) which is open towards the rear of the covering. This groove has a rounded bottom with a trapezoidal section. The rear part of the lower face is furrowed with longitudinal grooves (12).
