P The method according to the invention proposes an optimized self-protection in a spectral band including infrared, discrete and reliable, with a very low false alarm rate (TFA). The method exploits the bi-line analysis technique to develop attenuation rate values significantly representing the degree of threat of detected targets. A periodic panoramic detection makes it possible to follow the evolution of the threats, to classify them and to elaborate an adapted response. BR/ A monitoring device for the implementation of this method notably comprises scanning means (O, B , M) and two detection strips (B1, B2) equipped with a cold filter (F1, F2) to perform a periodic measurement of apparent intensity of a panoramic field of view on two near detection lines, one these lines being situated at the edge of the transmission band, and processing means (11, 12; 21, 22; 30) of the output signals (S1, S2) for developing said attenuation ratios and the setting of the devices Countermeasures (40).
