The present invention relates to a bistable display device based on liquid crystal, comprising a nematic liquid crystal material (10) of positive dielectric anisotropy sandwiched between two transparent confinement plates (20, 30) each provided with transparent electrodes (22, 32), characterized in that at least one of the plates (30) defines a quasi-bistable anchorage and that there is provided main power supply means (40) adapted to apply on the liquid crystal material (10) a temporary electric field capable of breaking the anchoring on the above-mentioned plate (30) and then, under the effect of hydrodynamic instabilities, of allowing different localized orientations of the liquid crystal molecules (10) corresponding to the prinvilégiés orientations of the quasi-bistable anchorage. / P
