The profile grinder has the grinding assembly (8) mounted so that it can pivot around the longitudinal axis (12) of the works vehicle to allow it to move to either side of the track. The support (4) for the grinding assembly is carried on the vehicle chassis, which can roll along the tracks. A motorised controller (18) sets the inclination of the grinding assembly relative to the support, and a second controller (17) controls the upward and downward movement of the abrasive tool (15). Another controller (23) provides longitudinal displacement of the grinder, imparting alternating movement along the rails. These controllers are operated from a remote control pad (46).
