Checking housing condition of tube within steam generator of pressurised water reactor

A method of checking the housing condition of a tube (4) in at least 1 opening passing through a plate (6) consists of causing it to vibrate and checking at least 1 vibration characteristic such as the resonance frequency and the damping. This characteristic is then compared with predetermined data so that the housing condition may be deduced. Also claimed is a device for carrying out this control check of a tube (4) housed in a cross-tie plate (6) of a steam generator that consists of a measurement and excitation head (15) of a size that can be inserted into a steam generator tube (4), means for anchoring the head inside the tube, a flexible tube (14) through which cables can pass to the head from an external control box (17) and means (11) for handling the head and axially aligning it in a particular tube (4).
