The system includes a resilient body (8,10) embedded in a supporting channel which is sunk into the surface of the road. The channel and body sizes are such that the resilient body projects above the road surface to a small extent, so that it can support the ends of a number of optical fibres (16) at intervals along its length. This gives rise to a line of illuminated points along the defined line on the road surface. Within the square section channel there are inwardly facing folded tabs. These engage corresponding apertures in the resilient material, holding this in position. At the top of the square section channel there are two projecting fins which are intended to lie on the top of the road surface and be attached to it.
