Method and apparatus for discriminating between phase and neutral conductors of a dead cable

A method comprises the steps of: connecting a first conductor of the cable to an earth sheath thereof at a user location; connecting two conductors and the earth sheath of the cable at a discrimination location to an apparatus such that said two conductors form two limbs of a Wheatstone Bridge circuit (2); and identifying at 4 the polarity of any potential difference across the bridge. As shown the neutral conductor (having a resistance RN) is connected to an earthed sheath (RE) at a user location and identified at the discrimination location as the conductor having the lowest resistance to earth, the phase conductor (RP) being connected to earth via a user load (RL).
