PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for safely producing modified chlorogallium phthalocyanine crystals exhibiting high sensitivity and good electrophotographic characteristics and excellent in dispersibility in binding resins, and to provide an electrophotographic sensitizer with the crystals. ;SOLUTION: This method for producing modified chlorogallium phthalocyanine crystals comprises reacting gallium trichloride with phthalonitrile or diiminoisoindoline in an organic solvent and subsequently subjecting the obtained I type chlorogallium phthalocyanine to a wet grinding treatment in water to convert the crystals and simultaneously convert a part of the crystals into hydroxygallium phthalocyanine, or comprises washing a slurry-like product obtained on the production of the I type chlorogallium phthalocyanine with water and subseqnently similarly treating the slurry-like product without drying the slurry product. The obtained modified chlorogallium phthalocyanine crystals obtained by the method may further be treated in an organic solvent.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
