PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure safety for users by halting the irradiation with microwaves when a pressure plate is opened by a user during the irradiation with microwaves. SOLUTION: This image reading device with the function of judging special documents, at the time of optically reading the image data of a document, scans the document by irradiating it with microwaves, detects the reflected waves, judges whether the document contains metal fibers, and judges the document to be special document such as paper memory which contains metal fibers in the case that the document is judged to contain metal fibers. This device is equipped with a pressure plate opening detecting unit 190 for detecting the open state of a pressure plate at the time of scanning the document by irradiating it with microwaves, and a document discriminating unit 160 for halting the irradiation with microwaves in the case that the pressure plate is judged to be open, and for continuing the process of the irradiation with microwaves for scanning the document in the case that the pressure plate is judged to be closed, on the other hand.
