PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decontaminate the metal wastes contaminated by UF6 at a low cost to the background level by spraying water to the metal wastes contaminated by UF6, dipping the metal wastes in nitric acid, washing the metal wastes in the water with ultrasonic waves, and finally spraying iron powder as an abrasive. ;SOLUTION: When water is sprayed to the metal wastes contaminated by UF6, a loose corroded layer on the surface of a metal waste base material is removed, and a crystal grain boundary section below it is exposed. The metal wastes are dipped in heated nitric acid, an uranium oxide is dissolved, and uranium nitrate is eluted. The metal wastes are washed in the water with ultrasonic waves, and the contaminated fine grains of the uranium oxide or iron oxide left on the crystal grain boundary section are discharged and removed from metal member infiltration sections. When iron powder is sprayed to the metal wastes as an abrasive in the blast process, residual uranium can be removed.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
