PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the optical fiber which is a quartz based optical fiber whose zero-dispersion wavelength is shifted to the shorter wavelength side than the light source wavelength and has good uniformity in wavelength dispersion in the longitudinal direction of the optical fiber and can appropriately be used for soliton transmission. ;SOLUTION: In this manufacture, a quartz based optical fiber preform 1 consists of a core glass 1a and a clad glass 1b which is placed on the periphery of the core glass 1a and has a softening temp. higher than that of the core glass. At this time, the refractive index distribution of the optical fiber preform 1 is set so that the zero-dispersion wavelength of an optical fiber 4 formed from the preform 1 is shifted to the shorter wavelength side than the light source wavelength. This optical fiber preform 1 is subjected to fiber drawing with tension of ≤1/3 of the tension that effects a minimum loss at the time of subjecting the preform 1 to fiber drawing so as to form a fiber having a 125μm standard outer diameter.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
