PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To match the accuracy of recognition with recognition processing time by rewriting the number of allowable categories stored in a recognition processing constant storing means to a smaller number based on a table when the processing time exceeds limit processing time. ;SOLUTION: An input display part 101 judges whether user's hand-written data are inputted or not, and when the data are inputted, extracts dot data from the handwritten data and informs a recognition control part 104 of the extraction of dot data. The control part 104 extracts feature data from the informed dot data. In addition, the control part 104 judges whether processing time informed from the display part 101 or read out from a time counting part 105 exceeds the limit processing time or not. When the processing time exceeds the limit, the new number of allowable categories is determined based on an allowable collation time rate calculated by using a prescribed equation while referring to a table of the numbers of categories stored in a data storing part 103 and collation time rates. Then the number of allowable categories stored in the storing part 103 is rewritten to the determined number of allowable categories.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
