PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the accuracy of predicting failure by detecting a state, in which many defects are caused, for a short time based on incidence of defect and predicting failure. ;SOLUTION: In the magnetic disk device, in which read/write access for a disk 1 rotating at a high speed by a spindle motor 3 is performed by using a head 2, an energizing time from a point of time, at which this disk device was first used, is measured using a timer 17, when read/write access is not normally finished but substitution processing for a substitution area is performed, an energizing time from a point of time, at which the disk device was first used, to a point of time, at which the substitution processing is performed, is stored in the prescribed region of the disk 1 as the latest defect occurrence time by a CPU 10, at the time of diagnosis for failure prediction, the CPU 10 calculates the latest defect occurrence rate based on times of a prescribed number of the defect stored in the prescribed region, and failure prediction is performed based on the defect occurrence rate.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
