PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To quickly report the change of specified information concerning a peripheral device to a host computer corresponding to that change in bidirectional communication at a centronics interface. ;SOLUTION: A status command is set to a printer so as to transmit the specified information concerning the printer of peripheral device at a printer driver on the side of host computer to the host side through bidirectional communication (302) and when there is any change in that set specified information at the printer, the change of specified information is reported to the host side by making a Fault signal active. When the level change of Fault signal is detected at the printer driver (304), negotiation is performed so as to quickly transmit information to the printer (305) and after it is confirmed whether the status command is set or not corresponding to that negotiation at the printer, status information is transmitted.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
