PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for radical polymerization capable of synthesizing a pure block or random homopolymer or copolymer of fixed length, controllable in the same way as that of ion polymerization or coordination polymerization under an industrially applicable synthetic condition. ;SOLUTION: A controlled radical polymerization of acrylic (methacrylic), vinyl, vinylidene and diene monomer is carried out in the presence of an initiator and a catalyst composed of at lest one metal complex of the formula MAa(L)n in a bulk, solution, emulsion or suspension at a temperature which may be low about 0°C without adding an activator. In the formula, M is Rh, Co or Ir, A is a halogen or a pseudohalogen, the group L is a ligand and is cyclo octadiene, RRR'R", P(OR)(OR')(OR"), NRR'R", ORR', SRR', SeRR', AsRR'R" or SBRR'R", R, R' and R" are independently selected from aromatic group- containing groups. At least two ligands in the ligands may be bonded by one or more bivalent radicals and (a) and (n) are each an integer and 1≤a≤3 and 1≤n≤5.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
