PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device that is accurate, has a simple structure, and measures a target and a method for measuring distance from the optical measuring device to the target. ;SOLUTION: An optical device 1 for measuring the distance of a target has a case 3, a first convergence lens 5, a light source 4 for applying light to a target 2, a second convergence lens that is located at a position for focusing rays that are dispersed by the illuminated target toward a direction that deviates by a certain angle from the light application direction, and a detection means 7 that is located at a position for focusing rays that are diffused by the illuminated target 2 and enter the case 3 through the second convergence lens. Also, rays are focused on a detection means by the second convergence lens so that an incidence point on the detection means changes as a function of distance from the target 2, and the detection means 7 generates two electrical signals with different sizes according to the incidence point of diffusion rays arriving from the target 2. Further, the device has a processing means 8 for calculating the numeric value of the measured distance by processing an electrical signal that is generated by the detection means 7.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
