PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To industrially and advantageously produce the subject compound useful as a synthetic raw material for biologically active substances such as vitamin E by efficiently and simply producing 6-methyl-2-heptanone from isovaleral and acetone and using the compound as a raw material. SOLUTION: Isovaleral is subjected to cross aldol condensation with acetone while continuously each adding isovaleral and an aqueous alkali solution to acetone to form 6-methyl-3-hepten-2-one and the compound is hydrogenated to form 6-methyl-2-heptanone and 6-methyl-2-heptanone is used as a raw material to finally form 6,10,14-trimethyl-5,9-pentadecadien-2-one, which is then hydrogenated to provide the objective phytone and the phytone is further reacted with a Grignard reagent to vinylate or ethynylate the phytone and the treated phytone is partially hydrogenated to provide the objective isophytol.
