MANUFACTURE OF MODEL ICE WITH COVER SNOW

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simulate a state as if dry snow were accumulated in the actual ice sea by spraying fresh water on the upper surface of model ice which is formed on the upper surface of mother liquor in a water tank to form the film of fresh water ice and accumulating snow on the upper surface of the film of the fresh water ice. SOLUTION: A water tank 1 is filled with the low concentration solution of salt or urea as mother liquor and atmospheric temperature is held at a prescribed temperature t1 (for example, about -20 deg.C) not higher than 0 deg.C. Then, when the thickness of ice which begins to freeze from the water surface of the mother liquor reaches a prescribed value, the atmospheric temperature is gradually raised by a warm-up method and finally, the temperature is maintained at t2 (t1 t2 0). The temperature t2 is usually -2 deg.C or so. Then, fresh water is uniformly sprayed on the upper surface of model ice 2. The fresh ice dropping on the upper surface of the model ice 2 absorbs the cold heat of the model ice 2 and instantaneously freezes to form a thin film 4 of the fresh water ice. Finally, cover snow 5 is uniformly accumulated on the film 4 of the fresh water ice to form the model ice with the cover ice.
