PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To keep musical sound data in an optimum compressed and stored state corresponding to the kind of a performance by making both data before compression and after expansion equal in the number of bits and data after the compression and before expansion different in the number of data bits. ;SOLUTION: A musical sound generating circuit 7 generates a musical sound signal corresponding to various sent data and data set in an assignment memory 8 and sends it to a sound system 10 through a D/A converter 9 to generate a musical sound. A ROM 12 is stored with programs for making a CPU 6 perform various processes, performance information, a velocity list, a step list, a gate list, a chord root list, a timbre list, etc. In this case, data corresponding to a specific kind of performance and data corresponding to different kinds of performance other than the specific kind of performance are compressed, expanded, or stored; and the data before compression and after the expansion area equal in the number of bits and the data after the compression and before the expansion are made different in the number of bits.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
