PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the waveguide type optical device which has small crosstalk and its connecting method, and the directional coupler and its coupling rate adjusting method. ;SOLUTION: This device consists of a 1st input optical switch 1 and a 2nd input optical switch 2 as two input switches formed on one substrate and a 1st output optical switch 3 and a 2nd output optical switch 4 as two output optical switches, has the four optical switches arranged as shown in the figure, and each of the four optical switches has two input ports and two output ports; and the two input optical switches are connected to the two output optical switches through waveguides 17 and 18, and 19 and 20 which do not cross each other.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
