PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a lubricant for preventing the surface roughening of a rolling roll made of wear-resisting cast iron which, when supplied to the surface of the roll, sufficiently inhibits the formation of an oxidation film on the surface even when a large amt. of a steel material is rolled by compounding a base oil, a highly basic alkaline earth metal sulfonate,. and a branched fatty acid (salt). ;SOLUTION: Examples of the highly basic alkaline earth metal sulfonate are a highly basic calcium sulfonate, a highly basic magnesium sulfonate, and a highly basic barium sulfonate. The sulfonate pref. has a base value of 100 or higher. The addition of about 0.1-10wt.% spherical silica particles having a particle sizes of 5-20μm to the lubricant can remarkably improve the adhesion of the lubricant to the surface of a roll.
