PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the processing efficiency of a character recognizer by judging a character information to be a document to be retrieved, executing character recognizing process on only the judged document information, and skipping the undesired character image information. ;SOLUTION: The character image information is inputted via an input part 101 and segmented into character images of one character units by a character segmentation part 102. A feature extraction part 103 extracts the features of the segmented character images. Then a word candidate is decided every time a character candidate is obtained and collated with the word information which is previously registered in a 2nd dictionary part 105. A sentence category is estimated based on the collated word information. If the estimated sentence category is different from the current object one, the estimated sentence category is decided as a non-object sentence. This decision result is outputted via an output part 108. Thus, a series of these processes are finished without reading the remaining sentences.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
