PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a modified clay composite material which gives desired rheological characteristics to various kinds of matrix by addition of a small amt. of the composite material by introducing specified groups into the surface of silicate in a unit layer state under specified conditions. ;SOLUTION: This composite material is prepared by introducing one or more kinds of functional groups by covalent bonds into the surface of silicate which is in a unit layer state and is preferably a kaolin-based clay mineral, talc-based clay mineral or mica-based clay mineral. It is preferable that the distance between bottom planes of the unit layer state silicate is increased by the presence of the functional groups and/or the average layer thickness of the silicate in the c-axis direction is controlled to ≤200Å. This clay composite material is prepared by adding physical external force on the silicate to cause cleavage to divide the silicate into a unit layer state and then adding a surface treating agent having one or more functional groups (e.g. silane coupling treating agent) to introduce one or more functional groups (e.g. amino groups and ethylene groups) into the surface of the silicate by covalent bonds.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
