PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a copolyester excellent in antistatic properties by incorporating a specified amt. of a hydrophilic compd., a polar compd. and/or a cross- linker, and an alkali metal salt and/or an alkaline earth metal salt into a copolyester. ;SOLUTION: Ester-forming components, such as terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, are subjected to transesterification under heating in the presence of a polar compd. represented by the formula: Yi-R1-Xn (wherein R1 is an org. group; X is an ester-forming group; and Yi is a sulfo group, etc.), a cross-linker represented by the formula: (R3O)nR2(COOR4)n [wherein R2 is a tri- to hexavalent org. group; R3 is H or acetyl; R4 is H or alkyl; and 3≤m+n≤6] (e.g. trimellitic acid), and an organometal catalyst. The resulting product is polymerized under heating in the presence of a hydrophilic compd. (e.g. polyethylene glycol having a mol.wt. of 600-20,000), an alkali metal salt (e.g. CF3CO2Li), and an organometal catalyst, thus giving a copolyester contg. 40-99wt.% hydrophilic compd.
