PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization separating/synthesizing device provided with a polarization selective reflection element capable of improving effective availability of light when applying it e.g. to a liquid crystal projector and obtaining a bright and clear image. ;SOLUTION: In a polarization separating/synthesizing device provided with a polarization selective reflection element so as to transmit through a first linear polarizing light beam, reflect a second linear polarizing beam whose vibrating plane is rotated by 90° to the first linear polarizing light beam or transmit a circular polarizing beam in some direction and reflect a circular polarizing beam rotated in the reverse direction to the former beam, a first concave polarizing reflection surface is formed by the polarization selective reflection element 13, this device comprises a second concave reflection surface 16 for again reflecting the reflected beam reflected by the first polarizing reflection surface and the direction of the optical axis of the reflected beam 15b again reflected by the second concave reflection surface 16 is made coincident with the direction of the optical axis of the transmitted beam 15a transmitted through the first concave reflection surface.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
