PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoiding falling into start-up difficulties of a large number of magnetic disk devices all at once in stopping and resuming the disk array device after its continuous operation for a long time. ;SOLUTION: In the disk array device consisting of a plurality of magnetic disk devices 204-207 comprising redundant arrays of inexpensive disks(RAID), an MPU 201 for controlling these devices, a control storage 201a, a parity arithmetic circuit 202 and a cache memory 303, etc., the control storage 201a is provided with an operating time management table 201b where an allowable continuous operation time Ti and a stopping time Ts are stored, and the magnetic disk devices 204-207 are individually operated to be intentionally stopped energy allowable continuous operation time Ti by the stopping time Ts, respectively. As to a request for reading data on one magnetic disk device under stopping, a response is made by utilizing a data recording function at the time of some trouble with one device out of the RAID, and as to a request for writing data to the stopping magnetic disk device, a response is made by writing an alternate spare disk device 208.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
