NEW MATERIAL:An optically active compound having an cyano group and expressed by formula I [R1 is 1-18C optically active or inactive alkyl, alkoxy, alkoxycarbonyl, alkanoyloxy, alkoxyalkyl, alkoxyalkoxy, etc.; ring A is formula II to formula V (X is F, Cl or CN), etc.; R2 is 1-10C optically active or optically inactive alkyl; C* is asymmetric carbon atom having (R) or (S) configuration]. EXAMPLE:4-(4-Octyloxyphenyl)benzoic acid 4-[1-(R)-cyano-3-methylbutyloxy] phenyl. USE:Useful as a liquid crystal composition and material for liquid crystal display. The compound expressed by formula I is effective as a material and raw mate rial for ferroelectric liquid crystal display, especially having excellent response and memory property. PREPARATION:A compound expressed by formula VI is used as a starting raw material to afford an intermediate compound expressed by formula VII, which is then reacted with a compound expressed by formula VIII to provide the compound expressed by formula I.
