PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound useful for a antiferroelectric liquid crystal display element, etc., capable of controlling spontaneous polariza tion while approximately maintaining the structure of an antiferroelectric com pound, by introducing a chemical structure having optical activity to the 1,3- positions. ;SOLUTION: This compound is shown by formula I [R1 is a (substituted) 1-18C alkyl; R2 is a 1-10C straight-chain alkyl; W is a single bond, O, COO, etc.; X, Y and Z are each COO or C≡C; ring D is (one or two fluorine atoms- substituted) 1,4-phenylene, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or 2,6-naphthylene; ring A to ring C are each ring D, etc.; * is the position of asymmetric carbon; (m) and (n) are each 0 or 1] such as 1,3-dimethylheptyl (1R, 3R)-4-[4-(4-decyl oxyphenyl)phenylcarboxyl]benzoate.
