PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compsn. for a liq. crystal alignment film which can reduce the creation of a contrast spot in a liq. crystal display device and has the effect of improving the yield in the preparation of a liq. crystal display device, a liq. crystal alignment film prepared from the compsn. for a liq. crystal alignment film, a substrate, for holding a liq. crystal in a sandwiched state, prepd. from the liq. crystal alignment film, and a liq. crystal display device, having a high image quality and a large display capacity, obtd. using the substrate for holding a liq. crystal in a sandwiched state. ;SOLUTION: In a polyimide constituting this composition for a polyimide type liq. crystal alignment film, at least 50% of benzene rings contained in a skeleton of a diamino compd. contains, in an at. of not less than 40mol% based on the total amt. of the diamino compound in the polyimide, a diamino compd. with at least one hydrogen atom located on a side of the ring being substd. by an alkyl group. The liq. crystal alignment film is formed from the composition for a liq. crystal alignment film. The substrate for holding a liq. crystal in a sandwiched state uses this liq. crystal alignment film.
