PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a residual quantity of paper so accurately without using a pulse motor and an encoder by calculating the residual quantity of load sheets of paper on a ramp with the working time of a motor till this ramp is made to go up and the paper arrives at a position where paper is feedable and the unit time corresponding to the paper information detected value. ;SOLUTION: In the case where a level sensor of a paper feed tray is turned on at a time when a power source of a copying machine is turned to ON at the opening of work, it is so judged that there is no supply of paper to the paper feed tray after the close of work since the power source has been turned off at the previous day, the residual quantity value of the paper at the close of work the day before is set up (St5) and it is displayed on a display part of the copying machine (St13). In the case where the level sensor is turned off, it is so judged that there is a supply of paper to the paper feed tray, and paper information in this paper feed tray and environmental information are detected (St7) and a lift motor is driven (St9), and time necessary for the lift-up of the paper and required information out of the paper information and the environmental information are all inputted into a preset operation expression and thus operation takes place (St11).;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
